Devin, the devil dog, or for those who know him well ‘Bob Barker’, yes, he does love to hear his own voice and he loves to create commotion when he enters a room. And commotion he creates, he created it when he entered my life and it took a LONG time to get use to this commotion and to finally love him. Devin is my tireless working partner, even at 10 he is ready to work, play and bark at a moment’s notice. He can truly be considered a once in a lifetime dog. His favourite things have not changed, he still loves to say hello to people, all of them, even if they are driving down the Guides Canins driveway; drivers be aware of the red and white dog with the wagging butt! Squirrels (real or imaginary) are still part of his life, actually it just has to move and his reaction to them has not changed, the chase is on and tree climbing is still wonderful especially if a bibit is up there. He shows his age only in his face and eyes these days, the drive and the love of play and work is still there and he patiently waits for his turn to play. When it comes to his activities, there are two things in life that Devin loves (we will not talk about people, eating or bibits at this point those are a given) skijoring and Flyball, maybe it is the barking that he is allowed to do, maybe it is the racing, maybe it is my love for these sports that have crossed the barrier, I don’t know, but his demeanour changes, he is a new dog when we get the skis out or he sees a racing lane, and at 10 although slower than in his youth, his desire and drive has not changed! His love for agility has not changed. He is sometimes more respectful of our partnership, and sometimes he likes to lead. He still loves to visit the timer and scribe at times especially if they encompass some of his favourite people; Liz and Diane you know who you are and you are members of a very select club! His Frisbee career is the one that I have noticed changed the most, not for his lack of love or of trying. He still tries for every throw, whether good or not, he still loves to jump, the landings a lot harder than in his young days, but again a desire that I have not seen in a lot of dogs. He is not retired from any sport, I don’t think that either of us are ready, he has slowed down and although hard we try to respect that….Mr Devlino you are truly amazing! His walks in the woods are still truly enjoyed and he has developed a new tolerance for puppies and other dogs. Devin has showed me a new love for training, I had no choice, he has made me humble in the obedience ring, he has surprised me at times, he has taught me patience, he has taught me unconditional love, he worked hard to break this barrier and he succeeded. He had huge paws to fill and he surpassed them at all levels! WE LOVE YOU OLD MAN!
